Businesses are required to file a Form 1099-MISC when they make payments to individuals that do not fit within the regular salary or non-employee compensation categories.

  • It must be sent to your taxpayer recipients and filed with the IRS by the specified filing dates. 
  • It is distinct from Form 1099-NEC, which is used to report Non-Employee Compensation (NEC).
