Leave Sharing Scheme

Meaning & Definition

A leave sharing scheme is a policy at the workplace that permits employees to donate a portion of their unused leave voluntarily to another employee who is in extraordinary circumstances (such as acute ill health, emergency medical treatment, or crisis management) at home or elsewhere. The leave sharing scheme provides employees with access to an alternative source of paid leave in situations where they have exhausted all of their leave and helps foster a compassionate, supportive workplace.

Importance of Leave Sharing Scheme

  • Assists workers throughout tough times and unexpected occurrences.
  • Creates an environment that promotes understanding and boosts a climate where employees feel supported.
  • Increases employee involvement and morale in the workplace.
  • Supports workers in coping with unanticipated events without losing money.
  • Provides a strong affirmation of the company’s commitment to taking care of its workers.

Legal Compliance & Policy Guide

In India, there is no specific legal compliance regarding leave-sharing schemes. Companies that operate a leave sharing program need to also have very clear guidelines defining what the eligibility criteria will be, donation limits for the qualified employees, the donation process (who approves the donation), and how and when the donation will be administered.
