Payroll tax rates
Meaning & Definition
Payroll tax rates is the percentage or amount on which payroll tax rates are determined. In India, payroll deductions could include income tax deducted at source (TDS), professional tax when applicable, and any other payroll deduction as per applicable laws. The amount to be deducted will depend on employee’s income, applicable tax system, state, and laws in force.
Important Aspects of Payroll Tax Rates
- Helps calculate the correct deductions from the salary of an employee.
- Determine income tax on salary through payroll.
- Employees know about the deductions from their salaries.
- Support employers in discharging their statutory payments.
- Helps avoid mistakes in payroll and tax calculation.
- Maintain payroll and tax calculation records accurately.
Compliance Guide
- Income tax on salary shall be computed in accordance with the provisions of the applicable Indian Income-Tax Law. For AY 2026-27, the new tax regime shall apply automatically to all individuals who satisfy the eligibility criteria, and have slab rates ranging from Nil to 30% depending upon taxable income.
- The employer is responsible for TDS on salary and compliance with all the provisions regarding reporting. Professional tax, if any, is levied by the respective state governments in India.
Note: Payroll tax rates can change through annual tax legislation and state-specific notifications, so payroll calculations should use the rates applicable for the relevant financial year and employee circumstances.
