Quiet Quitting

Meaning & Definition

Quiet Quitting is the process where people go to work and do exactly what is required of them and nothing more. However, this does not mean that the employee is quitting or leaving the job. Rather, they just want to keep a healthy work-life balance, which sometimes leads to doing less work.

Importance of Quiet Quitting

  • Assists HR in recognizing early indicators of reduced employee engagement.
  • Complaints may be an indication of general dissatisfaction, exhaustion, work overloads or ineffective managers.
  • Stimulates organizations to analyze staff workload and sufficiency.
  • Highlights the importance of healthy work-life boundaries.
  • Can affect productivity, collaboration, and discretionary effort.
  • Addresses the root problem, as employee concerns and feedback can help bring up issues.

Legal Considerations

Quiet quitting is neither an unlawful act nor a recognized employment status in India. Employers must clarify whether their concern is employees setting limits in their work or they are not meeting valid employment expectations.

The organization should establish clear job responsibilities, work standards, hours of work, leave entitlement, and workplace policies and procedures in accordance with employment and wages laws. Management action such as disciplinary steps should be based on recorded performance or policy violation and be fairly and equally administered.
