Performance Development Plan(PDP)

Meaning & Definition

A Performance Development Plan (PDP) is a structured plan that highlights an employee’s development goals, required skills, learning activities, and actions for improving performance or preparing for future responsibilities. It is generally created jointly by the employee and manager and provides a clear framework for tracking progress, addressing development needs, and supporting career growth.

Importance of Performance Development Plan (PDP)

  • Identifies specific employee development needs.
  • Establishes clear and measurable development goals.
  • Supports continuous learning and skill improvement.
  • Provides a structured approach to career development.
  • Helps managers track development progress over time.
  • Connects employee growth with organizational requirements.

Legal Compliance

There is no specific Indian law that requires employers to implement a Performance Development Plan (PDP). It is generally a voluntary HR and performance-management practice.

Organizations should administer PDPs consistently and in accordance with their HR policies, employment terms, and applicable workplace laws. Where PDPs contain employee information, appropriate confidentiality and data-protection practices should also be followed.
