Leave Credit
Meaning & Definition
A leave credit represents a specific amount of leave credited to one’s leave account. A leave credit is generally credited to an employee’s leave account on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, as provided in company policy. Leave credits can consist of earned leave, casual leave, sick leave, or other designated leave categories. Therefore, employees may use their leave credits to obtain approved absences during working hours.
Why Leave Credit Matters?
- Enables employees to track their available leave credits and other related leave balances.
- Provides support for employee attendance and leave management.
- Supports employer planning and scheduling of their workforce.
- Provides improved accuracy of payroll processing through the reduction of errors that are related to using leave credits.
- Provides benefits to employee morale by providing them with additional work and home life balance.
Applicable Regulations & Policies
Leave credit policies may be governed by:
- Shops and Establishments Act (various provisions by state)
- Factories Act, 1948 (where applicable, provisions for earned leave)
Employers should incorporate policies regarding leave accrual, frequency of crediting leave credits, carryover rules, and encashment policies within the framework of their leave management policy.
