Prerequisites
Meaning & Definition
Prerequisites refers to the requirements or conditions that are considered as necessary for an individual to be eligible to participate in an activity, process, function or opportunity. In the HR field, prerequisites may refer to anything from applicable requirement to prerequisite conditions for candidates or employees.
Important Features of Prerequisites
- Specifies the least amount of work required for a role or process.
- Helps HR teams screen candidates effectively.
- Ensures individuals meet necessary qualifications or conditions.
- Reduces confusion about eligibility and expectations.
- Supports consistent recruitment and selection practices.
- Provides employees with a sense of what they need to know at that stage.
Legal Considerations & Policies
Prerequisites Requirements must be related to the job, reasonable and uniformly applied. They should not require unlawful discrimination or contradict employment laws and policies on equal opportunity.
For regulated or dedicated jobs, employers may also be required to check prescribed educational awards, licences, registration, or professional certification where applicable.
