Holidays in human resource management can be defined as official days during which the organization allows its employees to have either paid or unpaid days off. They may include public holidays, national holidays, or declared holidays by an organization.

Importance of Holidays 

  • Make sure that employees get enough rest.
  • Supports in planning for the availability of the manpower.
  • Facilitates correct payroll accounting and calculation of leave.
  • Increases worker satisfaction and productivity.
  • Coordinates with national and cultural happenings.

Compliance & Policy Considerations 

Organizational holidays should obey the statutory obligations of national and state-based labour laws in India.

  • National holidays such as Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti are compulsory.
  • Regulated under the state-wise Shops & Establishments Act.
  • The Factories Act, 1948, provides provisions for leave.
  • The organization must clearly outline holiday policies in the employee manual.
