What is an Attrition Calculator?

The Attrition Calculator is an online tool that helps HR professionals and organizations calculate the number of employees who leave over a specific period. Enter the number of employees on the first day, the last day, and the number of employees that left. The calculator calculates the average number of employees and gives the attrition rate as a percentage, so you can keep an eye on turnover quickly and easily without having to do the manual calculations.

How to Calculate Employee Attrition Rate?

Attrition rate among employees is determined based on the comparison of the number of employees who have left the company during a certain period of time to the average number of employees during that period of time.

When calculating the attrition rate among employees, take into account:

  • Fix the period of calculation: Decide whether you would like to calculate the attrition rate on a monthly basis, quarterly basis, yearly basis, or any other specific period of time.
  • Employee Exit: Calculate the number of employees who have exited the organization during the chosen period.
  • Average Staff Number: Calculate the average number of employees during the chosen period of time.
  • Average Number of Employees = (Employees at Start of Period + Employees at End of Period) ÷ 2
  • Attrition Calculation Using the Formula: Divide the number of employees who have exited the company by the average number of employees and then multiply it by 100.
  • Review the result: Use the calculated percentage to monitor employee turnover and workforce trends.
Attrition Rate (%) = (Number of Employees Who Left ÷ Average Number of Employees) × 100

Retention Rate (in %) = 100 – Attrition Rate

An Attrition Calculator automates this calculation and gives a fast way to identify the employee attrition percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate the attrition rate, you generally divide the number of employees who left a company during a given timeframe by the average number of employees during that timeframe and then multiply it by 100. This gives you a percentage.

Attrition Rate (%) = (Number of Employees Who Left ÷ Average Number of Employees) × 100

Having an attrition rate of 80% means that the number of employees who left during a particular timeframe is equal to 80% of the number of employees working with that organization during that same timeframe. This figure has its importance; however, its meaning may depend on different factors such as the industry, position, location, and timeframe.

YTD (year-to-date) attrition is the total number of employees that have left a company up to a certain date that is being measured. In order to calculate the attrition rate for the period, you must find the ratio of the total losses that occurred during the year up to that date and divide it by the average number of employees during that period.

YTD Attrition Rate (%) = (YTD Employee Exits ÷ Average YTD Employee Strength) × 100

It is impossible to say that the 5% figure for attrition is good in all situations. Attrition has different levels that depend on the industry, job position, peculiarities of the organization, and the period the measurement is taken.
Although attrition and turnover are somewhat synonymous, their definitions may vary depending on the company. The concept of attrition means leaving the company, while turnover includes other actions of staff, such as their replacements or their leaving.
