Meaning & Definition

An Ombudsman is an independent and impartial person appointed to receive, investigate, and help resolve employee complaints, grievances, or workplace disputes fairly and confidentially. An ombudsman promotes transparency, fairness, and ethical practices within an organization.

Importance of Ombudsman

  • Provides employees with a confidential channel to raise workplace concerns.
  • Promotes fair, impartial, and timely resolution of grievances.
  • Helps improve employee trust and workplace transparency.
  • Reduces workplace conflicts and supports a positive work culture.
  • Strengthens organizational ethics and accountability.

Legal Compliance / Policy / Regulation

No specific statutory compliance is directly linked to the appointment of an Ombudsman in private organizations. However, organizations should establish effective grievance redressal mechanisms in accordance with applicable labour laws and internal HR policies. Where applicable, complaints related to workplace sexual harassment must be addressed through the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
