Meaning & Definition

Leave types are just one type of leave. They are a collection of employees who use their employer’s leave plan to be absent from work. Examples of leave types are sick leave, casual leave, maternity leave, bereavement leave, and unpaid leave. By classifying employees’ absence into leave types, HR can accurately track leave taken, process payroll and comply with applicable laws. 

Importance of Leave Type

  • Help HR categorize and manage their employees’ leave more effectively.
  • Leave types and their associated rules can help establish accurate attendance and leave tracking records.
  • Help with payroll calculations and pay for employees who encash their holiday leave.
  • Improve the transparency of holiday leave policies and increase employee awareness of holiday leave entitlements.
  • Leave types can also assist an organization in planning and maintaining workforce availability. 

Legal Compliance 

In India, several different laws may govern leave type and their entitlements, including the Shops and Establishments Act (of the appropriate State); the Factories Act, 1948; the Maternity Benefits Act; and any other relevant labour law, so it is important to have clear definitions around the different categories of leave and the eligibility requirements to claim leave through the leave policy.
