Externship

Meaning & Definition

An Externship is a short-term practical learning experience where students or newly graduated individuals get to observe professionals in real-world companies. Unlike internships, externships are generally of a shorter term and include more job tracking than actual work. Externships assist individuals in learning about industry practices and work expectations.

Importance of Externship

  • Offers real-world exposure to students and freshers.
  • Assists in the development of talent pipelines for organizations.
  • Enhances employer branding for organizations among educational institutions.
  • Supports skill awareness and career understanding.
  • Improves collaboration between the industry and academies.

Compliance Requirements

Externships are not generally subject to any labour laws if they are observational and unpaid.

However, note that:

  • If payment is involved, minimum wage and labour laws could be applicable.
  • Employers must provide a safe working environment and align with company policies.
