Absent Without Leave

Meaning & Definition

AWOL, or Absent Without Leave, is a term used to describe an employee’s failure to report to work without giving advance notice to their employer, or having no valid reason for their absence. It is typically applied when an employee fails to notify their supervisor or HR of their absence and has not submitted a leave request. AWOL is considered a major disciplinary concern in many organisations and will be treated as such by HR departments across the country.

Importance of absent without leave(AWOL):

  • Helps organisations to manage unauthorised absenteeism.
  • Provides security for business operations against employee shortages caused by unscheduled absences.
  • Ensures discipline in attendance and leave management systems.
  • Provides for equitable application of payroll and disciplinary policies.
  • Ensures the accuracy of attendance and payroll calculations.

Compliance & Policy Considerations:

In India, labour laws do not specify what constitutes AWOL.

AWOL usually falls within:

  • The attendance and leave management policies of an organization.
  • Service Orders where applicable,
  • Disciplinary Procedures are provided in the terms of employment.

If an employee is continually absent without leave or is absent for an extended period of time, they may be subject to disciplinary action, loss of pay, or termination after aligned with the points listed above. For more info, visit: Attendance Management Software
