Meaning & Definition
Diversity in the workplace refers to the cultural background, gender, age, religion and other differences that people have from one another. In Human Resources (HR), there is an importance on creating a diverse workforce; this is done by providing diverse perspectives and ensuring that everyone has equal access to all opportunities within the organization (for example, if there are people with disabilities or women of colour).
Why Diversity Matters?

Legal Compliance
India’s Constitution recognizes diversity as part of its fundamental values through Articles 14, 15, and 16, which provide for equal opportunities and prohibit discrimination against all individuals. In addition to the Constitution, employers must comply with several applicable statutes that promote diversity in the workplace, such as the Equal Remuneration Act 1976, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, and the POSH Act 2013 (Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplaces).
