Desk Audit

Meaning & Definition

HR or other management conducts a Desk Audit to review an employee’s job role, responsibilities, workload, and performance without any actual physical observation of work performance. This audit is normally based on documentation (e.g., reports, job descriptions, self-assessments) with the goals of ensuring the employee’s role is properly aligned with their actual workload or job duties; determining how to improve efficiency; and ensuring compliance with company policy.

Why Desk Audit Matters?

  • Assure that job descriptions align with jobs done.
  • Assist in identifying workload imbalances or misaligned roles (i.e., overqualified or underqualified for current employee work assignment).
  • Facilitate equitable pay jobs within organizations.
  • Improve accountability and documentation accuracy.
  • Support the organization with restructuring & audit activities.

Legal Compliance

Although there are no specific legal requirements for desk audits in India, desk audits can be used to demonstrate compliance with labour laws pertaining to job classification, wages, and clarified roles, especially when being audited externally by your company or internally by yourself.
