Meaning & Definition

Direct deposit is an electronic payment process that allows an employee’s pay to go directly into their bank accounts. This eliminates the need for receiving payment in cash or by cheque and allows for the timely, safe, and accurate payment of employee wages. The process is accomplished through electronic funds transfer through both banking and payroll systems.

Applicable Regulations & Policies 

In India there are no laws which require an employer to pay wages only with a direct deposit; however under the Payment of Wages Act 1936 it is recommended that employers use bank transfers or digital methods to pay employees’ salaries (most common in the case of large companies) in order to provide greater transparency and traceability of payments made by an employer to their employees.
