Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
Meaning & Definition
Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) is the process of treating all employees and job applicants fairly and without bias on the basis of their gender, religion, caste, ability, age, or any other legally protected characteristic. EEO also ensures that people have the same opportunity to be hired, promoted, trained, compensated, or get benefits in the workplace regardless of whether they have been discriminated against. This will be based only on their skills and qualifications, rather than any form of discrimination.
Important features of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
- Promotes fairness and non-discrimination in hiring and promotions.
- Unites a diverse and inclusive workplace culture.
- Reduces legal risk associated with discrimination claims.
- Increases employee morale through improved relationships with management.
- Greater employer brand & corporate reputation.
Statutory & Policy Alignment
The principles of equal employment in India are largely supported by the following:
- Code on Wages, 2019, provides for equal pay for equal work and prohibits gender-based wage discrimination.
- Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, requires protection against sexual harassment at the workplace.
It is also important for organizations to have a clear non-discrimination policy in place.
