Abscond

Meaning & Definition

An abscond refers to an organization when he or she leaves without following the appropriate procedures of resigning, informing the organization, or giving notice. Furthermore, an employee who absconds is not permitted to return to work. In terms of human resources, absconding refers to a long-term absence without authorization, where the employee has lost communication with the organization, thereby breaching the conditions of their employment and company policies regarding attendance.

Importance of Abscond

  • Distinguish between resignation, AWOL, and absconding absences.
  • Protect the organisation from disturbances to operations and productivity.
  • Promptly take action regarding attendance, payroll, and exit processing.
  • Provide support to ensure that disciplinary processes are fair and consistent.
  • Minimise the risk of legal liability and compliance by ensuring that documented processes are kept.

Compliance & Policy Considerations

Absconding is something that is usually prepared through the following means:

  • The terms of employment contracts and appointment letters.
  • Attendance policies, leave policies, and disciplinary policies.
  • The standing order and service rules (where applicable) of the organisation.

Typically, organisations will also follow ‘due process’ when dealing with absconding:

  • Issuing a show-cause notice.
  • Providing the employee with a reasonable period in which to respond to the show-cause notice.
  • If no response has been received, processing the termination in accordance with the organisation’s internal policy.
