Assessment

Definition and Meaning

Human Resources (HR) uses Assessments to collect data to assess skills, knowledge, behaviours and performance. Assessments work as a valuable tool for organisations to assess candidates during recruitment processes and performance management processes. The data collected through assessments assists organisations in making informed decisions regarding hiring, promotions, training needs and employee development.

HR Functions and Highlights

  • It enables you to objectively evaluate candidates when hiring.
  • Allows you to assess employee performance and competencies.
  • It identifies employee training and development needs.
  • Enhances the quality of decisions regarding promotions and the appraisal process.
  • Performed using assessment tools, tests, and HRMS platforms.

Legislative Requirements

Although statutory compliance per se does not exist for “assessment,” regulations/legislative requirements are implied through the following:

  • Employers must ensure assessment fairness, job-relatedness and non-discriminatory impacts.
  • They must have data privacy policies that provide for the proper handling of candidate and employee data.
  • Employers should document their assessment results and use those results within their documented HR processes.

They should also document how they are resolving any issues identified from their assessment results or evaluations.
